چکیده

The milk alkali syndrome was more commonly seen when milk and absorbable alkalis were the mainstays of treatment of symptoms due to acidrelated upper gastro-intestinal disease. The syndrome became rarer after the introduction of the non-absorbable alkalis and H2 receptor antagonists but it did not disappear altogether and should always be suspected when patients present with hypercalcaemia, renal impairment and metabolic alkalosis. Calcium carbonate is widely available in over-the-counter antacid preparations and is used in the prophylaxis and treatment of osteoporosis. An excessive intake can cause the milk alkali syndrome and it is possible that because of its increasing use more cases of the milk alkali syndrome will be seen in the future.

Raised parathyroid hormone levels in the milk alkali syndrome: an appropriate response?

A case of the 'milk alkali syndrome' associated with grossly elevated levels of amino terminal parathyroid hormone is described. The hypercalcaemia (calcium 4.09 mmol/l) and hyperparathyroidism settled on conservative measures. Factors in the milk alkali syndrome which might stimulate the release of parathyroid hormone include parathyroid gland hyperplasia secondary to suppression of ionized ca...

Milk alkali syndrome and the dynamics of calcium homeostasis.

I ntensive treatment with calcium-containing antacids and milk first was used in the early 20th century for the treatment of peptic ulcer disease and sometimes was associated with toxicity, eventually known as the milk alkali syndrome. Despite the introduction of H2 blockers and proton pump inhibitors for the treatment of peptic ulcer disease, the milk alkali syndrome continues to occur but is ...

Renal biopsy in the milk-alkali syndrome.

In milk-alkali syndrome the degree of renal impairment varies greatly. Few reports have been published describing structural changes on renal biopsy. In three illustrative cases, impairment of renal function was related to morphological changes shown on percutaneous biopsy. Milk-alkali syndrome should be considered as a cause of renal dysfunction in patients with a long history of dyspensia.

No more milk in milk-alkali syndrome: a case report.

This is a case of Milk-AlKali syndrome in a patient who presented with the classical triad of hypercalcemia, metabolic alkalosis and renal impairment. The source of calcium was over-the-counter calcium-containing antacid (Tums®). Milk-alkali syndrome was first recognized secondary to treatment of peptic ulcer disease with milk and absorbable alkali. Its incidence fell after the introduction of ...

Status epilepticus secondary to milk-alkali syndrome induced by hypercalcemia (oral antacids)

Milk-alkali syndrome is mainly caused by the ingestion of large amounts of calcium and absorbable alkali. This syndrome can lead to metastatic calcification, renal failure and metabolic alkalosis secondary to hypercalcemia. Hypercalcemia is rarely a cause of seizure activity. Very few case reports have been published linking seizure to hypercalcemia, but only one recent case report about mesial...
